Over the 1200 years of its recorded history, Frittenden has contributed to Wealden, county, national and, indeed, international events. In this history of the parish and its inhabitants the themes of evolutionary change and the dissidence of the population run throughout the centuries.

A central theme is the changing shape of the village and the farms within the parish, many of these having been inhabited by the Kentish yeomen. While historians of rural England tend to concentrate upon either the great landowners or the humble labourers, unusually this history traces the story of farmers and their farmsteads.

Over the centuries an increasing range of records brings a focus on the lives and personalities of Frittenden’s population, from those occupying the parish workhouse to those inhabiting the many houses important enough to be listed.
